This Month's Featured Article:
The Prosecution of Our Past
“It’s not what you are that holds you back, it’s
what you think you’re not.”
Denis Waitley
It is not important how we come to the events in our life. What is important
is how we deal with those events. Or, as I like to call this article,
“There is no such thing as a good excuse.”
In previous articles, I have shared tales from my darkest hours as well
as stories of my scholarships, reconciliation with my family, and full
rehabilitation. I did not share them with you in order to brag. I told
them to you with the hope that it would become clear that absolutely
anything could be accomplished out here in the free world. If I can
accomplish what I did within the harsh and violent confines of the federal
prison, you can accomplish absolutely anything you want with all of
the resources at your disposal.
In one article, I talked about the little voice. The one that tells
you why you can’t accomplish your goals. I talked about using
hope to banish that voice, but now I’m going to give you the final
blow just in case you find that it is still hanging around every now
and again. Are you ready? This is going to be pretty profound. Here
it is.
That voice is a liar.
Listen to it for a second… “You can’t afford college.”
Liar! “You’re too old to change your life.” Liar!
“You hit your wife because she deserves it.” Liar! “You
can’t quit because your addiction is more potent than other people’s.”
Liar!
How do I know that the voice is lying? Because those are all excuses
and when it comes to what is best for you, there is no such thing as
a good excuse. Can’t afford college? Bull, I did it from prison.
Too old? I’ve known older. She deserves to be beat? No one deserves
that. You suffer from a super potent, mega addiction? Mine made me stick
a gun in the faces of innocent people and rob banks. I kicked it.
I don't care what your background is, I don't care how you were raised,
I don't care what ethnic group or creed you belong to, and I don't care
what kind of bumps, bruises, potholes or obstacles life has thrown your
way. You can accomplish absolutely anything you want to accomplish if
you want it bad enough. Throw away the excuses and you will be set free
to be the person you want to be. Cling to them and you will always fail
for having never tried.
I heard this story while I was in prison and I want to share it with
you. It's a story about two brothers who come from the very same event,
yet have very different outcomes.
From Australia comes a story of two brothers caught stealing sheep.
The penalty for the crime was fierce. A brand of the letters “ST”
was seared into each one's forehead, forever marking them as “Sheep
Thieves.”
For one brother the humiliation was overwhelming. Sneaking from town
to town, he became crafty and cruel. Yet he could never get away from
himself, and finally he died under suspicious circumstances after years
of inner torment.
The other brother decided he had to face this crisis or be destroyed
by it. He chose to earn back his self-respect. He began each day with
the question “What can I do today to earn back my self respect?”
As years unfolded, people began to trust him, and his past crime became
a forgotten story on old newsprint. As he aged, he became a respected
leader of the community, a friend of those who struggled, and an example
of courage for the young.
Many years later a visitor came to town. He was surprised when he saw
an old man shuffling past a storefront with the letters “ST”
branded on his forehead. So he asked the clerk, “Who’s that
man? What's that all about?” The clerk said, “He used to
be the mayor here. There was some story about how he got those scars
on his forehead, but for the life of me I can’t remember what
it was. I think it has to do with him being a saint.”
Drop the excuses. It is time for you to succeed.
